FEMA released revised flood zone maps for Palm Beach County this summer. These are the first new flood zone maps for the county since 1989. The maps are used to determine flood insurance rates as well as whether mortgage holders are required to buy flood insurance.
Homeowners are required to buy flood insurance only in areas classified as high risk. Undetermined risk areas are locations in which flood hazard analysis was not conducted.
Why is this important to you?
The newly released maps reveal more than 50,000 Palm Beach County properties will be reclassified as being in or touching flood zones. We have seen some homes that were at one time in High Risk areas and after the new flood maps are now not in High Risk areas. The opposite is also true.
We encourage everyone to take a look at the new Flood Zone map to see if your property has changed designation. This could potential be a factor in the eventual sale of your home.
